Extremely interesting Mr. Branden! I tend to agree with you. My only objection is that this kind of “society” only works if the overwhelmingly majority of the population has a very high moral standard. Alas, my observation of the world is not that bright. Perhaps that says more about me as a person than libertarianism as a political expression….

At any rate, I appreciate your efforts in the area of self-esteem. This makes SO much sense to me.

I’ve just stumbled onto your ideas, Dr Branden, after a number of years of reading in the fields of philosophy, psychology and literature, and medicine (the degree Im completing at the moment). You have perhaps the most gifted ability to convey the truth about our relation to self, how it reaches into all aspects of our life, how it matters almost above all else. Once I finish reading your book 6 pillars, I’ll get my hands on whatever else you have produced. You are nothing short of brilliant.

Dr. Branden, you are so right about the term “libertarian” being appropriate to describe the political philosophy of Objectivism. I have gone round and round with people over this issue. They don’t understand that a given political philosophy can have adherents from numerous philosophical schools of thought.

Why, if you’re going to be finicky about the term “libertarian” because some anarcho-capitalists also use the term, you just as well abandon the term “atheist” because some liberal secular humanists also use the term! Or the term “selfish” because some Stirnirite “egoists” or self-absorbed narcissists use the term! Or the term “capitalist” because some businessmen who seek subsidies and monopolies use the term!

Well…I’m sure you got the point several examples ago!

Ironically, Ayn Rand herself wrote about this error in “Collectivized Ethics” (in The Virtue of Selfishness) and called it “the fallacy of the frozen abstraction.” Her example was the altruists who didn’t want to concede that egoism was also a morality, that only sacrificial morality is morality.

The altruists were answered by Nietzsche and Stirner who gave away the farm and said, OK, if morality includes sacrificial theories, then we’re not moral, we’re beyond good and evil. (There’s some room for interpretation of their actual views, but they really did eschew morality to the extent they equated it with sacrificial religious morality.)

Dear Nathanial, I thank you for your concise explanation of true FREEDOM, and what the great minds of our Founding Fathers understood so well as their basis of our Constitution. I look around today and see flocks and flocks of sheep as American’s have so lost touch with their inherent need for their own individual spirit. Thinking individualism is a fashion statement found at a mall, or in the pages of a magazine. Wondering what else can we each do to contribute to an awakening of their minds before it is too late? How do we remind them of history that has been erased by deceptive socialistic politicians and modern day medievalists? I turned to you in my early adult years for your guidance and wisdom, and continue to live with gratitude for your continued work each and every day. Respectfully, Jill G.
